Abstract

Introduction: Traumatic brain injury is one of the main causes of hospitalization in intensive care units, requiring specialized attention and systematized interventions on the part of the healthcare team. Objective: To analyze national and international publications on the care provided to patients with traumatic brain injury admitted to intensive care units. Methods: This is a descriptive literature review with a qualitative approach. The studies were identified by searching the secondary database of the Virtual Health Library. The data for this study was collected between October and November 2024, using the following Health Sciences Descriptors and their Boolean combinations to conduct the search in the databases mentioned above: Intensive Care Units AND Head Trauma, combined with the Boolean operator AND, in order to guarantee the relevance and accuracy of the results obtained. Results: 12 scientific articles published in national and international journals were analyzed. The national and international studies show a predominance of traumatic brain injuries in young men, often caused by motorcycle accidents, followed by falls from a height and car accidents. The main complications include intracranial hemorrhage and neurological sequelae. Final considerations: Analysis of the data presented shows that traumatic brain injury remains a significant public health problem, mainly associated with motorcycle accidents, falls and car crashes.
